Before I got serious about my diet, I began to have problems with redness, swelling and discomfort of my elbow. My grandmother had several kinds of arthritis, one of which gave her a similar complaint, so I went to my dr to talk about it, and she suggested it might be gout, not arthritis. I thought that was kind of odd, because I expected something like gout to affect my big toes first, and I thought it unlikely because I am female and I have a family history of arthritis, not gout.
